    Foton G7 : some context

The Foton G7 is actually the latest evolution of the Foton Tunland , which we know here as Foton Terracota (at the time when Foton’s light vehicles were represented by Andes Motor) and later under the name of Foton FT500 . This truck has undergone some changes in recent years, but at CIDEF they decided to do things right and skip those changes to bring us the latest version.

Why didn’t it come as Tunland? Well… it’s a matter of paying attention to his pronunciation to realize that he wasn’t the best name for Chile.

Foton G7 : dimensions and design

    • Length: 5,310 mm
    • Width: 1,880mm
    • Height: 1,860mm
    • Wheelbase: 3,110mm
    • Load capacity: 950kg
    • Towing capacity: 3,000 kg (with brake)
    • Clearance: 210mm

Not much remains of the FT500 and the Terracotta, at least if it comes to looking for appearances. The main dimensions give it away, as well as the design of the windows, but the exterior sheet metal was completely remodeled. Now we see wide wheel arches but integrated into the design of the fenders and a flatter grill with a hexagonal frame where we can read the name “Foton” very large (in the “Ford”) instead of the previous logo.

Thanks to the darkened B-pillar, the mirrors and handles in gray and the 18″ two-tone wheels, the aesthetic is much more refined and updated. In the back we find a tailgate with a plastic molding (we saw it with Maxus too, another reference to “Ford”) where the name “Foton” reads big.

Note that the G7 was presented with two packages last year, Sport and Adventure. Today only the Adventure package remains , which is standard and includes roll bars with metal mesh to protect the rear windshield, metal basket on the roof and a winch: a big plus.

    Foton G7 : Powertrain

Past editions of the Foton (Terracota, FT500) used a powerful 2.8-liter Cummins engine. Today, Foton has a stake in a company called Aucan (Ou Kang), which has combined two areas of expertise: Isuzu engines and Cummins engines (it’s not for nothing that Aucan’s logo is almost the same as Cummins’). In addition, Aucan has been working together with renowned companies such as BorgWarner, Bosch, Ricardo (those who make the gearbox for the Bugatti Chiron) and FEV.

With all this, they have come up with a new family of 2 and 2.5-liter turbodiesel engines. In the case of the Foton G7, it is the smallest:

    • 4F20TC2, of two liters and four cylinders in line
    • VGT Turbocharger provided by BorgWarner
    • Bosch Common Rail Direct Injection
    • Euro V approval
    • 147 Hp and 330 Nm of torque
    • six-speed manual gearbox
    • Electronic traction selector (for the 4×4 version). It does not have a differential lock.

Consumption for this engine is between 11.6 km/l in the city and 14.7 km/l on the highway.
